M&M Review: Protecting Your Teen From Today’s Witchcraft
Protecting Your Teen From Today’s Witchcraft by Steve
Russo
I was originally interested in the book because of some things I had heard and seen over the past few years about Wicca in the central Texas, including a “witch” store opening in a small Hill Country town. (It has since closed.) As a former middle school teacher, I’m also interested in young people in general. Though my own children aren’t teens yet, it won’t be long until they are. In the meantime, I like to keep an ear open to things going in the in next age group they’ll be in.
Going in to the book I was wary of an “it’s evil out there, so hide your children” mentality I’ve seen in other books. What I found, among other things, was a practical approach explaining why Wicca appeals to teens, negative media influences, warning signs of possible occult involvement, good parenting advice for all parents of teens and a clear explanation of several foundational Biblical doctrines. While he makes the dangers of witchcraft clear, Mr. Russo doesn’t stop there. He spends just as much time providing the truth of Christianity, including a comparison of Wiccan beliefs with Christian beliefs. He also challenges parents to live out their faith honestly in front of their children, reminding them that they, not the church, are primarily responsible for the spiritual training of their children.
The book’s conversational tone makes it an easy read. The
detailed information about Wicca and the occult make it a valuable reference
for parents and teachers. Current outlets for Wicca, a brief history of
paganism and Biblical advice on how to best combat the false teachings are a
few topics covered. Mr. Russo’s experience speaking to and with thousands of
teens translates well into a useful book for parents or others involved with
youth.
